Birthday Wishes with edit.
Uncle Ruben,
I can't imagine what it must be like to have lived 90 years on this earth, especially with all the changes our world has experienced in your lifetime. However, you seem to have adjusted to these changes with a love for life and a good attitude.
I want to thank you for all the times we had as children hanging out in Hebbronville for the summer. I still remember you driving us around town with us kids riding in the back of Grandfather Elbert's pickup truck. I also remember eating Aunt Barbie's famous fried chicken. It is still the best I have ever eaten.
I want to thank you for looking after Grandmother Eliza for so many years. You and Barbie were there for her when she needed you most and this shows what a generous heart you have.
I want to say thank you for being a good big brother to my Dad. He loves you and is very proud of your accomplishments.
Thank you for your service in the military and your sacrifices during the war.
Thank you for welcoming me into your home in McAllen when I had business there and making my time more enjoyable.
Thank you for the wonderful children you and Aunt Barbie brought into this world and for raising them to be loving, kind and responsible citizens. The fact that all of you are so close speaks to the love and care you and Barbie brought into their lives as they were growing up.
I love the way you wrote down some of your life experiences and allowed us to read about them. Also, I admire you for continuing to enjoy your hobbies and love of learning new things. I love your big loud laugh, your way of kidding around with all of us and your zest for life.
Love you,
Bill David

Uncle Ruben,
I think about all the changes in the world you have experienced over your lifetime. I'm sure it's been quite a ride. When Elbert asked me to send you some memories, so many came flooding back. I quickly realized that if I wrote each story down, it would end up being a novel. Consequently, I have simply listed some brief thoughts that came to mind. I could have gone on with more but I'm sure these will be enough to get the ideas across and thus allow your own mind to meander back and remember your own version as well.
My list:
Blue Station Wagon ('57 Chevy?)
The night your snoring practically scared me to death. I just knew there was a bear in the room next to us!!
One bathroom for a family of 5 (and then add our family to the number while visiting!)
That bathroom always smelled like damp newspapers.
Aunt Barbie's huge bras hanging from the outdoor laundry line.
When Uncle Ruben got mad, we all ran for the hills!
Burying cow heads in the sand and waiting an eternity for that awesome deliciousness.
Picking oranges off the tree in front of Grandma Lisa's house
We girls using Grandma's front porch as a grand stage to perform on.
No AC (I don't remember being uncomfortable).
Wiping off our sandy feet before getting in bed.
Hearing the mourning dove coo and the roosters crow in the mornings since the windows were always open.
All of us kids sleeping on the floor in Grandma's living room.
Easter Egg hunts in y'alls front yard with 1 extra special egg that contained $1 bill.
The excitement of coming to see our cousins! The long drive was always worth the wait!!
Arriving at 2 am to Grandma's tamales and a pot of beans hot and waiting for us. More deliciousness!!
Aunt Barbie's Kool-Aid! Her secret combo of flavors always hit the spot on those hot summer days.
Playing Kick the Can at night.
Barbie Ann almost blowing her thumb off when she didn't throw the cherry bomb fast enough and it blew up.
Horny Toads in the sand
Biggest ants and ant beds I'd ever seen
Uncle Ruben's infectious laugh! No one got a bigger kick out of his own joke than he did : )
Aunt Barbie's heart to serve others. She always made sure our tummies were full and our hearts were happy.
You and Aunt Barbie were so kind and loving to Ken when he became part of my life. I remember our family reunions as adults and all the fun times sharing old stories and laughing all over again. Such good times!!
I know you will have a great birthday weekend and I look forward to seeing you again whenever that may be. I love you and miss seeing your sweet face! We are so blessed to have been part of the same family. Our childhood wouldn't have been the same without you, Aunt Barbie, and all your kids being part of it. You have been richly blessed!
With much love and many blessed birthday wishes from your favorite niece on your brother's side,
Judy Johnson

Hi Ruben!
I heard you were turning 90 years old, which means Ralph and I are right behind you. You were 16 when I met you. Ralph and I were around 14 and 15 when we discovered each other. You and he owned and ran a small grocery store across from Mom and Dad's house. My youngest brother, Mauro, who was around 10 or so spent a lot of time around the store and was the first to inform me that Ralph liked me. Mauro gave me a "Holloway" candy (caramel on a stick) that Ralph sent to me. Later he and I walked together from school.
After graduation I started working at the telephone office, where I met Barbie Saenz. I was so impressed with her because she was so sweet and kind. Later, I found out her mom had died quite young and left her father, Andres, to raise her children. There were 7 children. Barbie's oldest sister took over the job of helping her dad to raise the family. The whole town was so supportive and so impressed with the family because they were so young and yet so well behaved.
Ruben started dating a girl that for some I reason I didn't approve of. I thought Barbie was better for him … and besides, we could double date. At that time, there wasn't much single dating. Usually two of three couples would get together and hope one of the guys had a car. We did movies the same way, but usually went to the matinee on foot and later go for cokes or ice cream at the corner drug store.
It was a sad time when you and many of our schoolmates and several of my brothers were drafted into the army. It almost killed your mom when you were wounded. Thank God you were sent home after that. We were all so proud of you!
I'm sorry we won't be with you to celebrate your birthday. Just know we're there in spirit. We are so grateful to the Lord for granting us this time on earth. This is our temporary home and someday we will have a great family reunion with our loved ones. We will see our Beloved Savior face to face.
Thank you for being such a loving big brother to my precious Ralph and a sweet brother-in-law to me. I've always admired you for reading and studying the Bible and how well you interpret His word. We have great memories of visiting each other, traveling together and sharing about our Lord Jesus Christ and His grace. You are special and I love you.
Your best sister-in-law,
Elva

Ruben,
As my only brother, I've loved you much and I've prayed for you during all the "highs and lows" of your life. I thank God for your "highs" that include:
Mom and Dad's love through the years and their heart-felt appreciation for your and Barbie's constant help during their last illnesses.
Your great early years at home, at the grocery store and at the ranch. Reminds me of the time you and I went down to the corn barn and a rattle snake at your feet scared you and caused you to lunge backwards to the latched door which you burst open, landing outside.
Your early twenties, when you fell for and married Barbie. She was a rock of support and the fantastic mother of your children.
The next several years when your children were born.
The many trips we shared, including California, Louisiana, Europe (Austria, Germany) and Israel. Of course, this reminds me of the time in Germany when you were accidentally left behind at a train stop and had to take the next train to catch up with us. And who can forget the time in Israel when you and Barbie slid off the camel's back! Both incidents were scary then, but funny now.
The "lows" include the loss of our parents, your being wounded during World War II and the loss of Barbie a few years ago. The Lord has been with you throughout and He continues to be there for you today. And we are here for you, too.
We love you and your family very much.
Love,
Ralph

Uncle Ruben,
We are honored to play a small part in this fantastic celebration of your birthday! We have so many fond memories of you, Aunt Barbie and your family. Although I was young when we made those trips to Hebbronville, I still recall the great food you all served us: from the in-the-ground pit barbacoa, to Aunt Barbie's tortillas, to Grandma Eliza's corn masa gorditas.
I remember your sometimes stern exterior, but mostly your love of laughter and love of family. It was really neat to see where you and dad grew up. We will always have a special closeness to you and your family. We love you!

Dear Uncle Ruben,
It is hard to believe so many years have passed so quickly. I think the reason is we have had so many good and loving people in our lives.
I can still remember arriving in Hebbronville in the early hours of the morning after driving 5-6 hours. Your family and Grandma Eliza would be waiting with hot food. It was so exciting and the South Texas air smelled so clear and fresh.
I can remember one night leaning on the hood of your old blue station wagon, looking up into the beautiful night skies and looking at the stars with you. I was about 10 or 11 years old and we were both fascinated with the beauty and wonder of the heavens. It is a good memory of some time with our beloved Uncle Ruben. Thank you.
Love,
David
