My heart breaks for my friend, Sandra, and the Martinez and Medina families. For 30+ years, Dora ("Mrs. Martinez" to me) was a second mom. I spent many sleepovers and slumber parties at her house and enjoyed her cooking, especially carne picada con tortillas. In junior high and high school, she could always be seen in the gym's bleachers, cheering on her daughter's volleyball and basketball games, and most recently she was there for me during my wedding, when she hemmed my dress at the last minute, in her living room and with the help of Mr. Martinez, personally made the box that held our wedding rings.
Her voice and her laugh are one of those you'd never fail to recognize, and I can hear her questioning my actions as if I was one of her own..."Jamie, don't you think you should....". It is a complete shock and a tremendous loss to those who know and love Mrs. Martinez. Her quick wit and "call you out" nature will be missed, but her love of family and friends will live on through us. The next time I get up to sing a song at karaoke, it will be in her honor.
Mrs. Martinez, you left us too soon, but I know you are in a better place. I miss you already. I promise to ALWAYS be there for your family, especially Sandra. XOXO.
