Guang-Lin Zhao posted a condolence
Friday, January 20, 2017
Anxiu and Dr. Ben and our family are long time very good friends for more than 24 years. Anxiu came to Louisiana State University (LSU) in 1992 as a postdoctoral in biology; Guang-Lin was a postdoctoral in physics. We were the next door neighbors living there for ~5 years. Anxiu always smile, love, and help as you need. She sometimes played mother/son game with our little boy. Ying (Guang-Lin's wife) worked with Anxiu in the same group in the same lab for ~5 years until Anxiu took a faculty position at University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA). Ying talked with Anxiu on the phone for almost every week or every day for how to do their work. Anxiu called Ying before the Christmas and talked about how to write a review paper for their research work together in the new year 2017. In March 2015, after attending the American Physical Society Meeting, Guang-Lin rent a car and drove from San Antonio to Edinburg to visit Anxiu and her family. We were very happy to see them having good school, good work, good family, and good life at Edinburg. We talked about to move to the same city after we retired, and live there for the rest of our life. But suddenly, we have a big loss, a loss of a part of our life as all you have.
God bless and love Anxiu and all of you.

I am at a loss for words that she is no longer here. I will miss seeing her when passing by her office, or when we crossed paths in the hallway and greeted each other, or when she passed by my office and often say, "goodbye" or "go home" for the past 13 years. It saddens me that I will not hear her voice and laughter in the hallways or from her office, but I will always cherish the many memories I spent talking to her these past 19 years. Thank you Kuang family for bringing this kind and wonderful person to work at UTPA/UTRGV.

At that time, we had Dr. Xiannong Meng and his family, Dr. Shihui Chen and his family, Dr. Jinhao Wang and her family, you and several other friends. One of my favorite memories of Dr. Kuang was a pollination experiment in my plant physiology class. Upon growing plants hydroponically for the greater part of the spring semester, some began to bloom. One of my classmates wondered if he could try to pollinate his plant so he could grow some seeds. Dr. Kuang enthusiastically went to a drawer to look for a "special pollination instrument." Upon finding it, she quickly returned to continue with the pollination. While I was expecting to see a soft brush or a cotton swab, she returned with something a little more magical. Her instrument was a stick with a fuzzy, desiccated bee glued to one end. She went on about how the pollen would stick to the bee's fuzzy abdomen and best mimic natural pollination. And using it as nothing less than a magic wand, she proceeded to show us how to tap on flowers and vibrate the stick with our hands to liberate the plant's pollen. It was immediately clear then that I wanted to be like her, never overlooking even the smallest details.
Those who had the privilege of meeting Dr. Kuang know that she was just as magical outside the classroom. Her witty humor and sweet demeanor made all her students gravitate to her, even after they had left school and pursued their careers. To visit her meant receiving wonderful advice, a share of her mid-afternoon snack, and possibly a few quarters to load more time into the school parking meters. Visiting her also meant that we could talk about our successes and defeats with our gardens, a topic that I can rarely indulge with many people. Her cheerful greetings always made me feel welcome and my departure made me wonder when I would visit again.
Dr. Kuang, connoisseur of pollen grains and grafted trees, dreamer of nitrogen-fixing grains, specialist in auxins and gibberellins, you will be dearly missed. I am saddened by your departure and will miss you as my mentor, but I know that a life like yours prompts the rest of us to live with as much passion and kindness. These are the things that transcend the physical limitations of life.

Dr. Kuang was a friend and a colleague. We shared our lab for a year and our offices were next to the other. She was a tea drinker. She prepared tea everyday and came to my office with the jar and poured it into my cup. Sometimes she share chocolates and cookies. We usually talk about our responsibilities as professors near retirement. Last time, we talked about our salaries and she told me that the increases were on the way. Having her as my office neighbor, I always heard her talking in Chinese over the phone and laughed a lot. That was her nature. She reflected happiness. Last time we talked she manifested of being very proud of her nephew who came from China and learned English very quickly. She brought him into my office and introduced him to me. Dr. Kuang always had students in her office although she had her door closed. Students knocked and she welcomed them with a loud laugh and took her time in giving them advise. Whenever the students in the Medical Room were making noise she came to my office and sent me to keep them quiet, and them we smiled at each other when silence was returned. I still cannot recover from this unfortunate news. I will always remember Anxiu. I always will remember the Chinese works I learned like Nihauma (good morning) and cheichein (thank you).
