ARTURO NINO
LA FERIA - Arturo Nino a pioneer “Conjunto Legend” was born on April 4, 1941, in Alamo, Texas and entered eternal rest on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, in Harlingen, Texas. Mr. Nino was preceded in death by his parents, Micaela Niño and Manuel Niño.
Arturo was 8-years-old the first time he laid his eyes on an accordion; he saw it at his aunt’s house. The instrument belonged to his aunt’s father-in-law. This is when his musical interest and passion first began with the accordion. A year later, he went with his parents and brother to J. Edelstein’s Better Furniture in Mc Allen, TX. His parents had intentions to purchase furniture. Instead, his parents purchased Arturo’s first accordion when he was 9-years-old. At the age of 17-years-old, Arturo recorded in 1958 his first 45 RMP the polka “El Tricherazo” and second polka “Paris.” By 1962, he earned the name of “EL KROMATICO” when he demonstrated his mastery of minor chords on the accordion. “Arturo was so much in love with Conjunto music that he mastered five instruments and played them professionally.” He was a Chromatic Accordionist, Diatonic Button Accordionist, Bajo Sexto Player, Drummer and Bass Player. Arturo was a multitalented icon; he was a Singer, Music Composer and Musical Artist. Throughout his life, he received multiple awards and accolades. Arturo was inducted to the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame & Museum, Tejano Roots Hall of Fame & Museum etc.., On 10/08/2022, Arturo received the South Texas Conjunto Association Lifetime Achievement Award. Furthermore, Arturo’s music recordings can also be found at The Strachwitz Frontera Collection of Mexican and Mexican American Recordings-UCLA. His late brother Artemio Niño was an Opera Tenor. Those who are reflecting and remembering the many “Good Times” with Arturo include his sister, Alma (Santos) Hernandez; daughter's, Annette (Alfredo) Bernal, and Angela D. Niño (John) Velez; son's, Arthur Ashley (Angela T.) Niño and Art Niño.
Arturo was very “Blessed” to have 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, many (nieces, nephews, cousins) and friends. After a brief recovery at the ICU on 08/11/2022, Arturo sang his last bolero “Paloma Negra.” The day before Arturo departed, the last song he sang with his daughter Angela and granddaughter Ashlynn was “Skinnamarink-I Love You.” Arturo’s last words were “I Love You.” Which he repeated multiple times to his daughter Angela and granddaughter Ashlynn. The following day, while he was in agonal breathing. The last song Arturo Nino heard before he passed away was “Morir Soñando.”
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary Thursday, August 25, 2022, at Legacy Chapels 4610 South Jackson Road in Edinburg. Chapel service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 26, 2022, at Legacy Chapels in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.
Funeral services are under the direction of Legacy Chapels in Edinburg.
