SILVIA JOYCE OFTON
MCALLEN - Silvia Joyce Ofton, 89, passed peacefully into her heavenly reward on July 7, 2021. Mrs. Ofton was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-five years, Robert Nels "Bob" Ofton; two sisters, Myra Dell Houston and Lela Maye Tyler; her baby brother, Benjamin "Benny" Steward and her parents.
Joyce was born in Dalhart, Texas on August 11, 1931 to William Marvin Steward, Jr. and Odessa Blanche Statser Steward. She graduated as Salutatorian in 1947 from Mission High School at the age of 16, after which she attended Abilene Christian University, where she majored in Home Economics. Having accepted Christ at an early age, she was a faithful member of the North Mission Church of Christ for 81 years. Joyce was also involved in multiple community and civic organizations over the past 75 years. In 1980, she was honored to receive McAllen's Woman Of The Year Award from the McAllen Chamber of Commerce.
She is survived by daughter, Melissa Ann Johnson (Kenny); three granddaughters, Meredith Pittman (Martin), Christina Tripp (Brandon), Amanda Chadwick (Logan); and three great grandsons, Luke, Liam and Landry Pittman.
Joyce was a devoted wife and mother, first and foremost. Known for her vivacious personality, positive attitude and generosity, she will be sorely missed by her family and friends. The effects of her many kindnesses toward others will however be long felt in these years to come.
A private memorial service will be held for the family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Smithlawn Adoption Home, P. O. Box 6451, Lubbock, Texas 79493-6451, who blessed our family with her granddaughter, Amanda; or to the charity of your choice.
