OLIVIA CASTILLO GARZA
PHARR - Olivia Castillo Garza was born in El Campo, Texas on September 25, 1938. Her parents Reyes and Josefa Castillo were honest, hardworking migrant field laborers that raised a combined family of 9 brothers and 5 sisters. All which have proceeded her in death. As the youngest daughter of the original Hidalgo founding family, she was the apple of their eye. She was educated in the Hidalgo school system and married Juan Antonio Garza Sr. when she was 15, he was 20 years old. They were ready to conquer the world and start they’re family.
Olivia’s greatest legacy was her children and the resilience in the manner she lived her life. She troubled no one about their religion and demanded others to respect her beliefs. She loved life, the beauty of life, the unknown, and the never guaranteed options. She greeted when meeting or passing friends and strangers alike. She showed respect to all people and never groveled to no one. She thanked God every morning for a new day and prayed a hedge of protection over the loved ones every night. She thanked God when she had little and when she had much she shared with those who had less.
Olivia Garza was strong minded, strong willed, and never apologized for her convictions. Her moral courage knew no bounds and was able to look anyone in the eye and say that something was “right” or “wrong” Olivia taught her children compassion and empathy in strength, humbleness in greatness, and to move forward according to “GODS” will. Mom never allowed us to sit in pity of ourselves and never allowed us to complain without looking for solutions and finding one! . One of her favorite quotes was “ Dios aprieta pero no ahorca” our Lord may close one door but he will always open a window allowing you the ability to breathe and never suffocate you. Above all else to thank God for what we did have and not for what we were lacking. Moms faith was immense, strong and unwavering.
