Obituary of Cristina R. Flores

Edinburg - Cristina R. Flores, 83, entered into Eternal Life on Friday, January 3, 2014. She was born Elena Cristina Rodriguez on February 14, 1930, in Edinburg, to Alicia Alamía Rodriguez and Amador Rodriguez. She was the second oldest of seven children. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and it was there that she gained a deep love for Christ and His Church. Inspired by Saint Theresa, she dreamed of becoming a nun, but she eventually chose a different path. She graduated from Edinburg High School and shortly thereafter began administrative work for the law firm of Rankin, Kilgore & Cherry. She married her husband of 62 years, Arturo Z. Flores, while he was on leave from the U.S. Army. While her husband attended Pan American College she worked as a legal secretary and office manager for local Criminal Attorney and Texas Senator James S. Bates. Throughout her adult life while working and rearing her six children, Cristina became involved in many family, church, and civic activities. She was Regent of the Catholic Daughter's Court of Mount Carmel, director of the Pan American Round Table of Edinburg, Grand Sultana of the Alhambra Club, and Woman of the Year for the City of Edinburg. She was preceded in death by her mother and father and her brother and sister-in-law Amador, Jr. and Dora Rodriguez. She is survived by her husband, Arturo Z. Flores, her two sisters Diana (Bryce) Taylor, Alicia (Tom) Booth and her three brothers Joe (Emma) Rodriguez, Eduardo (Paula) Rodriguez and Romeo (Berta) Rodriguez. Additionally, she is survived by her sons Arthur Paul (Dolley) Flores and Eduardo Dario (Cristela) Flores; her daughters Anna Marie (Mark) Olsen, Lisa Beth (Joel) Jacobsen, Dorinda Olivia (Marty) McHugh, and Carla Cristina (Matthew) Marnon; grandchildren Ivan, Matthew, Nicholas, Clayton (Leah), Celina, Connor, Bennett, Alexander, Damon, Carolina, Merida, and Ethan; and great-granddaughter Corinne. Cristina has always felt that her life has been blessed abundantly. Through these blessings, she has touched everyone who has been fortunate enough to know her. Family will receive friends from five o'clock until nine o'clock in the evening on Sunday, January 5th 2014 at Legacy Chapels, 4610 S. Jackson Rd., in Edinburg. A rosary will be take place at seven o'clock in the evening and be viewed online at www.legacychapelsrgv.com. Funeral mass will be held at eleven o'clock in the morning on Monday, January 6th 2014 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg with Father Gregory T. Labus officiating. Cristina's sons and sons-in-law will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow at El Rucio Cemetery in San Manuel, TX. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org). Funeral Services are under the direction of Legacy Chapels in Edinburg.
