Dr. Lang was my teacher when I studied at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. He instructed my thesis on linguistics. He was such a knowledgeable and nice mentor.
I just got the “news” of his pass away from another teach today, very surprised and feel very sorry about it.

Words cannot express my sorrow.....I was in Professor Lang's Linguistics class at Huazhong University of Science and Technology back in 1988. He was an excellent professor and inspired me a lot in my career of teaching...I visited him and his wife at Edinburgh in 2012 when I came to the US. Both Professor Lang and his wife treated me as family...I was hoping to visit them again one day...Yang Laoshi and Langtian, I am sorry for your loss.I can’t imagine what you must be feeling right now... It was still just like yesterday. We met Lang Yong in Columbus OH while we were still at the Ohio State University. We crossed paths a few times at the apartment complex without talking much to each other. I noticed that one day he was putting away some garden tools. So, I asked him if he had a garden and it turned out that his in-laws were visiting them. One conversation led to another and it helped that our two families lived 2 apartments apart. I don’t remember how it got started, but somehow, we began to get together at their apartment every Friday evening. Weiwei would cook and we would bring some food, we talked about life, we talked about our futures, though at the time, it was a pretty difficult one. After we finish the delicious food, it was card time. We were all very “competitive” players, men as a group vs. women as a group, trying to win, maybe with some “tricks”, but nobody minded, after all, we are families, win or lose, it stayed in the families. Little did we know, it was all those small moments on the Friday evenings that took away many uncertainties and brightened our prospects for the future. We miss those moments, we will miss you forever.

Yong and I were college classmates between 1977- 1981. He was the class president and I was the youngest mate (6 years younger than Yong). For the 4 years of schooling together, Yong displayed his fine personal characters as a leader and as a person. I learned and benefited a lot from him. After graduation, Yong and I served as faculty members at the same university before I came to the US in 1985 and he came afterwards. Due to our busy work and living schedules in the US, Yong and I lost touch from each other. Over the years we were in the US, we only talked twice and both times he called me to inform me that a former classmates passed away. It was very sad for me to get a call last week from another classmate that Yong had just passed away as our 3rd former classmates leaving us. Because Yong was the head of the class, we now feel that we have lost the soul of our former class. However, Yong, the remaining classmates will always remember you as our leader, will cherish your kindness toward us and will be inspired by your friendship. Your youngest class follower, James Jing

I had the honor of knowing Dr. Lang as my professor while I was a graduate student at UTRGV. Always with a smile on his face, he would teach his students about the wonders of language and the impact it's had on the world. He would kindly laugh at our jokes when we were being silly and engage us in conversation with passion and profound knowledge. He was a remarkable mentor who always knew what to say. During my time in his class, Dr. Lang and I had a conversation about linguistics that truly changed my life. This is the way he inspired and helped all of us. It's been three years since then, but I carry those words with me every day of my life.
Dr. Lang was more than just our professor. He was a friend to all of us, someone who most of us aspired to be. He always saw the best in his students, even when we couldn't see the best in ourselves.
Dr. Lang, thank you for being the greatest teacher this world has ever known. You will be deeply and truly missed.
My deepest condolences to Dr. Lang's family. May peace and comfort find you during this difficult time.

听闻郎老师辞世的噩耗，心都停止了跳动。
形容郎老师没有哪个词比严师慈父更合适，他是一个真正意义上的好老师，才华横溢，学高八斗，对学生发自内心的关爱与呵护。
在学业上对我们严格要求，在生活中给予我们无微不至的关心，虽然和老师真正的相处只有一年，但这一年里郎老师对我们关怀备至，事无巨细，悉心垂问。想起郎老师每周一次召集的研究情况汇报的压力；每次节日去郎老师家吃饭聚会的开心；带我们外出活动的欢欣雀跃，无不历历在目，令人潸然泪下。每一次相处都如沐春风，每一个细节都充满温暖，每一次回忆都让我们想质问苍天为什么这么不公，为什么要这样的一位好老师离开我们。
郎老师太爱操心，他操心我们的学业，操心我们的研究方向，操心我们回国的工作，操心我们在美国的生活，操心我们出去游玩的安全...从我们出国前到把我们送走的一年多时间里，郎老师不知为我们操了多少心，我们常说如果他能多考虑一下自己，少为别人着想，也许他不会生病。
郎老师是心有大爱的人，他常说能多做一点事，多为国家培养一些人才是他所希望做到的，所以要尽心尽力地培养我们。现在想来真是愧对恩师。
我们何其幸运在美国能遇到郎教授这样的好老师，我们又何其不幸，让我们品尝痛彻心扉的失去恩师的痛苦。
痛失恩师，茫然无措，片言只语，难寄哀思，郎老师，一路走好。

深切怀念恩师郎勇教授
2019年1月28日早上起来，打开微信，从朋友圈得到一个犹如晴天霹雳般让人揪心的消息：我们最尊敬的美国导师、德克萨斯州立大学大河谷分校郎勇教授不幸去世。
这个消息让我的大脑出现短暂的空白，惊愕、悲伤的我无法相信这个事情的真实性，更无法接受这个让人痛心疾首的事实。我到处查看消息，想证明我看到的消息是错误的，但是从朋友圈得到的答案是：我们的郎教授在与病魔斗争了2年后，心脏衰竭，已经离开了我们！
郎勇教授是我们衡阳师范学院与德州大河谷分校的红娘，他亲手为我们两所学校搭起了友谊的桥梁，为了让我们衡阳师范学院的各位老师能顺利去美国学习访学，他费尽了心思，一趟又一趟在美国和中国之间奔波。郎教授对学生无私奉献、不求回报的师德师风让我无法忘怀，他那高尚的人格魅力让我感慨万千。我们每一批老师去，都是他亲自开车去麦卡伦机场接机。记得我和胡主任去爱丁堡时，因为风暴我们的航班延迟，他有事不能来接机，于是他让夫人卫卫前来机场接我们，并把我们带到饭店吃饭，饭后他陪我们去报到，去银行办理银行卡，安排好住宿，一切办妥，他才回家。他简直就是我们在异国他乡的大哥哥，好兄长啊！
每次我们去他办公室，他都会找出最新的学术资料给我们看，语重心长地指导我们写论文，international week 他带着我们走上讲台，跟来自世界各地的学者分享我们的中国文化。
我们在美国的方方面面都得到郎教授夫妇的关怀和照顾，他开车送我们去购物，过年过节亲自下厨给我们做可口的饭菜，他自己载种的蔬菜和水果总是送给我们品尝。
郎教授英俊潇洒、穿着讲究得体，他那俊朗的脸庞，一丝不乱的黑发配以笔挺的西服，亦或比较随意的休闲装，显现着一位高雅大方、令人敬仰的师长形象。在与郎教授相处的短暂日子里，我看到的是一位师德高尚、博学多才，为人厚道的长者，感受到的是恩师对工作的那份敬业精神和对学生的那份挚爱之情。
郎教授从教几十年，从武汉到英国，再到美国，经他培育的学生遍布世界各地，从政者有之，从商者有之，其间不乏有居高官为富翁者，而他却依然独守着为师的清贫，信守着为师的原则，如红烛般流着最后一滴泪；如春蚕般吐着最后一缕丝……
郎教授严谨治学、文学功底深厚，让我这个做学生的佩服的五体投地。他一个在中国长大的华人，在说英语的美国教授英语，多么的了不起！尤其是他那循循善诱、春风化雨般的教学方式滋润着一批又一批莘莘学子，让他们在知识的海洋遨游，在理想的天空飞翔……
郎教授为人谦和、做事认真，他总是以一颗宽容的心对待周围的人和事，用满脸的微笑显现着他乐观向上的心理状态。他一生与世无争，从未刻意去追求所谓的功名利禄，郎教授一生命运多舛，他在坎坎坷坷的人生道路上书写了平凡而又精彩的一生。
郎教授，无情的肺癌让您这位仅仅度过六十四个春秋的师者的生命嘎然终止，您走的是那么匆忙，让您的家人，您的亲友，您的学生们如何面对这个残酷又残忍的现实！郎教授啊，您的爱人需要您的陪伴，您的家人需要您的关怀，您的父母需要您的照顾，您的儿子的婚礼需要您来主持，您的文友们等待和您切磋，我们衡阳师院还有多少老师等待您给他们发邀请函去美国深造，更有多少学生期待聆听您的谆谆教诲啊……
希望恩师天堂有知，能够感知到我们对您的深深思念，如果有来生，请让我再做您的学生，好吗？愿恩师一路走好！

1993我去Ohio 念书，是朗勇开车去接的我。那是我在美国生活学习的开始。1996年念完书在Columbus 工作我们又成了邻居。经常一起吃饭喝酒。之后我们来了加拿大，他们去了Texas. 就没见过他，但知道他们一家在学校安定下来，教书，买房，种菜，儿子也有出息。一直为他们高兴和感到骄傲。

那样强壮的他，
曾从小在长江边上长大，

For the past two years, we watched how Dr. Yong Lang fought with this disease. He stayed positive and never gave up. We hoped for a miracle, and are so saddened that a miracle didn’t happen. Yong was so kind and warm-hearted, always helping out others. He was an exceptionally decent person and a close family friend for many years. His presence will be deeply missed. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Yong Lang. We have known Yong since he moved to the Rio Grande Valley. Although our interaction with him was mostly through badminton, he was our good friend and often offered a helping hand to us before we left the Valley in 2012. When we met him shortly after the 2017 Christmas in the Valley, he looked fine and was in good spirits. We never thought that was the last gathering with him. Yong was such a wonderful person and he will be truly missed and remembered by us and many more. We wish to express our most sincere condolences to Weiwei and their family. We strongly encourage Weiwei to stay strong and take good care of herself during this difficult time.

Please accept my deepest condolences for your family's loss. I worked with Lang laoshi on Chinese: Communicating in the Culture (CCC) project when I was a graduate student at OSU. He flied from TX with his MAC and set it up in our project room to work side by side with me for one or two weeks. He was such a great mentor .
